This is a rare survivor of a 1974 Fiat 128 Coupe. This was a coupe version of the popular 128 saloon and was built for about 3-4 years before being replace by the hatchback 3p version. I owned one of these as a teenager and always promised myself another but did not realise that it would take nearly 15 years to find one. This one came up for sale so I had to have it and was located only 10 miles from my home. With a little bit of investigation work on the internet it appears that there are only singles figures of these left in the UK. Maybe that was why it took me so long to find one! -

This Imp was originally built by Team Hartwell of Bournemouth using a standard Imp shell and fitting a 998cc engine with gas-flowed head, twin carbs and large-bore exhaust. The suspension was lowered. It was originally registered as a Hartwell Imp. It was road-tested by Motoring News and other publications. I bought it from its first owner in 1977 and gradually modified it for road rallies, adding a roll cage, auxiliary lights, uprated suspension, and a high-lift cam. It was used until 1985 when it was suffering from the rigours of rallies and 'tin-worm'. It was garaged 'pending restoration' - until 2010! The need to demolish the garage required action and fortunately contact with Imp Club member and restorer Colin Rooney resulted in restoration to its current condition. It had a recent engine rebuild with rebore, increasing its capacity to the current 1020cc. It is now used for classic car runs and shows, and the Shere Hill Climb when accepted. -

Purchased by us in 1988, the car is in very original specification. The engine was rebuilt in 1990 by Howard Vesey in Faversham, and in the mid 1990's some of the paintwork was refreshed. As would be expected for a 52 year old vehicle brake, suspension, and steering parts have been replaced over the years, but the car has never been completely stripped and restored and still sports the original dealers number plates. -
